Data for European sovereignty

This article is a transcript of a hearing with Timothée Rebours, co-founder of SEALD, publisher of the eponymous software, and Thierry Leblond, co-founder of SCILLE, publisher of PARSEC software, two “zero trust” cybersecurity software packages for end-to-end encryption of sensitive data in the cloud.

The challenge of encryption lies in controlling who holds the encryption (de)keys, rather than in the encryption itself. The issue of data encryption boils down to two questions:

  1. What do we want to quantify?
  2. Who holds the encryption key?

Thierry Leblond, co-founder of SCILLE

With the arrival of 5G, everything will communicate with everything. We’re no longer in a strong castle-type perimeter logic, where security is simply a matter of protecting the network, using firewalls or probes to detect flows and so on. The billions of connected objects that will be arriving in the future are just as many possible points of attack; it is therefore imperative to change the security paradigm.

When we talk about security on the Internet, we need to understand that there are 3 levels of security:

  1. Authentication security,
  2. Transport safety
  3. The security of sharing
